The 10.7 km Valley Trail runs behind the Superstore at 471 Smythe Street and goes westward to the city limits on Woodstock Road. The Valley Trail often reveals views of the St. John/Wolastoq River and its islands. A variety of habitats are observed while walking this trail: residential neighbourhoods, commercial structures, horse pasture, woodlands, an RV resort, parks and riverbanks. Sightings of birds along the way include waterfowl, woodpeckers and warblers, and a variety of songbirds. Generally considered an easy route, it takes an average of 2.25 hours to walk.
Trans Canada Trails assisted in trail reconstruction after a culvert was damaged; they helped fund the installation of a replacement culvert to keep this trail safe and usable.
In early 2021, the Fredericton Trails Coalition and New Brunswick Provincial Exhibition (NBEx) announced a joint trail beautification project, issuing a call for artists to create a new piece on the graffiti-covered NBEx horse barn. The finished mural, a 400+ ft ode to the city and its historic role in provincial harness racing, was inaugurated on September 6, 2021, by the Honourable Brenda Murphy, Lieutenant Governor of New Brunswick. The stunning work by Halifax-based Trackside Studios is a bright and welcoming addition to the community. The mural is expected to be in place for at least 5 years.
